I'm being told that my tardiness in updating our blog is troubling to readers who are trying to follow our escapades closely (read: I'm in trouble!). I have a full list of excuses ready in my defense: 1) intermittent internet access, 2) lots of boat work, 3) contracting work, 4) busy with kids and husband, 5) computer stolen by passing sharks, 6) fingers frozen in lower than 70 degree weather in VA, and a host of others.
We have made it to our nation’s capitol - what an extraordinary place! We docked at a downtown marina and walked to the local fish market which was a cool experience for the kids – stalls with fresh fish, MD blue crabs, squid, and octopus.
On the 4th of July, we started our day with a tour of the Capitol Building. It was stunning, historical, awe-inspiring, and incredibly moving. We also went to the Library of Congress which was just as grand. Our tour also included the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History – unfortunately, we only got to the early earth/dinosaur and mammal exhibits. We’ll go back to catch the Egyptian, the geology floors (Tom, be ready for a call from Nicholas), and we’re also planning on seeing the Aeronautics and Space building. We also saw the Washington and the WWII monuments.
The fireworks display was as beautiful as the experience was moving. Seeing the show over the Washington monument in the Capitol was an experience none of us will forget.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, part of our D.C. and holiday experience was an invasion. Yes, a true infestation . . . not of bugs (!) or rodents . . . but family. Mom and Dad, sisters Barb and Mary, nieces MaryAnn and Adrienne, and Adrienne’s two children Paiton and Blake. Orkin does not do family infestations (I called!). So we’re all packed in the boat sleeping on every available surface, laughing, eating, drinking, giving everyone a hard time and generally having fun together. We’ve invited them all back to the Bahamas with us for Thanksgiving (what were we thinking?!?!?!).
More regular updates to come ;-)
Life is good at the end of an anchor!
Wow, thanks for the update and sounds like a great time in DC. How awesome to have your family come visit. Don't forget to stock up on some stuff before the Bahamas, call if you need info!! And make sure and schedule 2 nights at Atlantis Marina (you can check in earlier than the website says and come back in the dinghy for the rest of the day after you leave)
