Bahamas Info

We have many more pictures to show you, but I thought I'd talk a little about life in the Bahamas.

*The first thing that's remarkable to us is the geography. We expected white sandy beaches surrounding each island with flat land. What we see, however, is higher elevations with trees, bushes, scrub going all the way to the water. There are some sandy beaches but they're dotted with rock formations making them a little treacherous. The rocks are beautiful though and a geologist's dream. I have a close up pic which I'll post.

*Each morning, there's a cruisers' net which means everyone who is here by boat listens to channel 68 on the VHF and people discuss events, problems they need help with, weather, etc. We've already met a few people with kids who are on the net and it's been great. We feel like we have a network of new friends even though we're miles away from home.

*Things we take for granted in the US are difficult here. Power for example. It tends to go on/off ... for days. Sometimes it's a forced brown-out because there's simply not enough power to go around or something may be broken and it takes a while to fix. Phones here have been out for a couple of weeks and the latest estimate is that they will be out for another three. Grocery stores are only stocked once per week, and if the weather keeps the boat from arriving, the stores are empty.

*This place is a bit of a "little America." We've met tons of people from the US and fewer from other countries.

*The weather is very much the tropical pattern we see in Florida. Storms pop up constantly, clear up and the sun returns. It feels like every 10 minutes, the sky is different.

*It's relaxed. That can be a good thing, especially if you're vacationing. But it can also be a struggle - service at restaurants, stores, etc. is simply not there. No one cares. We noticed that everywhere from Atlantis (a five star resort) to the smallest individual proprietor shop.

More to come . . .

Life is good at the end of an anchor!
